Course Description

As a CPA, California clients rely on you to warn them about labor law issues that affect their finances and payroll practices. The best CPAs can spot legal issues and potential noncompliance because they know what current CA laws require and know when a labor lawyer should be consulted.

This Boot Camp will give webinar attendees a jump start to be the best at protecting clients by demonstrating the ability to spot potential legal problems and get the client the help they need to avoid expensive litigation.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify how to navigate the maze of California statutes, reported cases, wage orders, and state agency regulations that could trap your business client and lead to the owner’s personal liability

  • List the most current wage and hour requirements for a variety of tricky timekeeping and pay issues, including new paystub requirements, pay reporting, on-call or standby time, piece rates, an alternative work schedule, de minimus time, and other mandatory compensation

  • Recognize how brand-new laws affect California independent contractors vs. employees, so you don’t advise your clients with incomplete opinions or “the way it’s always been done”

  • Name hot topics such as discrimination and harassment claims, contract provisions, paid and unpaid leaves, layoffs and other terminations, and COVID reporting laws in effect until 2023

  • Define how new privacy laws affect information your clients can and must submit or retain in confidential records
